Import file / used audio equipment / United States

Import used audio
equipment into the US.

Used does not mean duty-free. Condition affects admissibility and value; classification, origin and trade measures still decide the border cost.

Commercial speakers, amplifiers and PA equipment are commonly bought used because the resale spread is attractive. The trap is costing the goods as a single “audio” line. Speakers, amplifiers and parts can sit in different HTS lines, and China-origin goods may face Section 301.

Classify the actual item

Loudspeakers often sit around 8518.22 or 8518.29; audio amplifiers around 8518.40. A complete PA system, a replacement driver and a mounting bracket can be three different lines. The supplier’s invoice should describe each item separately.

“Used” is a condition, not a classification. A used speaker and a new speaker can share the same heading, but the admissibility and valuation evidence may differ.

  • Separate speakers, amplifiers and accessories on the invoice.
  • Ask for model numbers, power ratings and photos.
  • Do not assume a single code for a mixed consignment.

US duty and Section 301

The audio planning band is 0–4.9% for base duty. China-origin products may also face a Section 301 rate; the exact percentage depends on the HTS line and the measure in force.

The US has no federal import VAT, but MPF and HMF can apply. Port, broker, drayage and any exam costs sit outside duty.

  • Confirm the 10-digit HTS line and any 301 measure.
  • Check electrical safety and FCC scope if the equipment transmits or connects.
  • Budget for packaging and handling if the used goods are fragile.

Volume, not just value

Speakers are bulky relative to their value. The model uses a default 12 kg and 0.08 CBM per unit; 100 units is about 8 CBM, which is LCL territory. A larger consignment can cross into FCL and change the freight per unit.

Actual packing can be very different. Measure the pallets or ask the supplier for packed dimensions before relying on the freight line.

What this page does not decide

It does not classify your goods, confirm origin, determine the customs value, promise a freight rate or replace a licensed broker. Use the sample as a planning frame, then replace each assumption with a confirmed figure.

Common questions

Can used speakers be imported into the US?

Often yes, but admissibility depends on the product, safety and any applicable agency requirements. Used condition can trigger inspection or documentation questions.

Does Section 301 apply to used goods?

Origin and HTS line generally drive the measure, not the fact that the goods are used. Confirm the specific line and measure.

Why is my freight higher than the sample?

The sample assumes a default packed volume. Actual pallet dimensions, weight and port pair can move the freight materially.
